7 weeks ago, my journey in South Africa began. And I call myself very lucky to be able to see beautiful things here. Unfortunately, I also saw real problems here. Problems that have showed me the world in a different perspective. I could not ignore these problems or turn my head around anymore, like most of us do back in Europe. I see it now every day and I believe the world can do better. We need to do something to try and give something to the community that has actual problems.
That is why I saw the opportunity to volunteer at the Peter Pan Day Care. This day care cares for 82 children in the township who are trying to get a better future and are eager to learn. These children have the ability to grow and really want to. Unfortunately, due to the poverty in South Africa there is no money available for the day care to have a decent building, furniture and even food for the children.
I am starting a fundraiser and will use the money to build a decent closet for the little backpacks of the children. And buy tables for the children to eat, play and study the alphabet for example. Also for outside when it gets really hot here in South Africa. In this way, everyone can contribute to a little beginning for a better future for these kids. Please remember, 1 euro is already 15 !! Rand.
Peter Pan Day Care is situated in Nemato, a Township at Port Alfred. Parents pay 300R per child for 1 month. And in total, there are 82 children that go to this day care, which is a lot but otherwise it is not affordable to run the business.
The money is divided between the 3 ladies working at the Day Care but after the electricity and rent is paid for the ´´building´´, so eventually the ladies work for 10 R per day. 10 rand is equal to approximately 65 cents in Europe. The parents need to bring the food of the children and all children live in the township, since the day care cannot afford food for the children.
