Hill conquest to save the Hill Myna

The European Association for zoos and Aquaria now runs the Silent Forest Campaign. A Campaign to raise awareness for the alarming situation many South East Asian songbirds are facing at this moment due to the songbird trade. One of the flagship species for this campaign is the now critically endangered Nias Hill mynah. The Nias Hill Myna is the largest of all the starlings and mynas and is an endemic resident of several islands off the west coast of Sumatra. Trapping pressures for the songbird trade have let to its massive decline. Surveys have determined that the species survives on only a few last remaining islands where ongoing conservation efforts are urgently needed to prevent its extinction. There is an urgent need to build-up an ex-situ population and start a scientifically run conservation breeding program.

Dennis Appels and Joost Lammers, bird enthusiasts working in Birdpark Avifauna in The Netherlands, would like to raise some money and awareness to support this critical endangered bird. Therefore they are attending one of the toughest one day cycling races in Europe, the trois ballons, in the France Vosges on the 9th of June. They will have to suffer in extremes to fulfill this race of 214 km with a total of 4400 altitude meters to conquer. They hope you would like to support them in this conquest and sponsor them to help the Hill mynas.

The money they will raise will go directly to the project Save Magiao: Nias Hill Myna Conservation Breeding Center, selected by the EAZA Silent Forest Campaign.

Op de pedalen voor de beo!

Dennis Appels en Joost Lammers, vogelverzorgers in Vogelpark Avifauna, vragen jullie hulp bij het redden van de ernstig bedreigde Nias Beo. Deze vogel, die alleen voorkomt op enkele eilanden voor de kust van Sumatra, wordt namelijk zeer ernstig bedreigd door de levendige handel in zangvogels in Zuid-Oost Azië. Als er niet snel wordt ingegrepen zal deze soort voor altijd uit de wouden verdwijnen. Dat kunnen en willen we niet laten gebeuren!

Daarom willen Dennis en Joost graag geld inzamelen door op 9 juni de Trois Ballons, een loodzware eendaagse wielrenwedstrijd in de Franse Vogezen over 214 kilometer met maar liefst 4400 hoogtemeters, te gaan fietsen. U kunt ze sponsoren! De opbrengst wordt gebruikt om het project Save Magiao, wat zoveel betekent als red onze Beo, te ondersteunen. Dit is een van de projecten die door de Europese vereniging van dierentuinen (EAZA) is geselecteerd voor de Silent Forest Campaign. Een campagne waarbij aandacht wordt gevraagd voor de alarmerende situatie waarin veel Aziatische zangvogels verkeren door de levendige handel in zangvogels in Azië. Vele soorten zangvogels, waaronder dus de Nias Beo, worden hierdoor in hun voortbestaan bedreigd en daardoor dreigen de Aziatische wouden voor altijd stil te vallen…………
