Met GIERENde banden

Wij zijn Dennis Appels en Joost Lammers en werken als dierverzorger en collectiebeheerder bij Vogelpark Avifauna. Op 2 juli 2016 zullen wij de Marmotte fietsen met als doel zoveel mogelijk geld op te halen om de Afrikaanse Gieren Crisis een halt toe te roepen.

De Marmotte is een eendaagse wielerwedstrijd in de Franse Alpen van 176 km, waarbij maar liefst 4 legendarische Alpenreuzen, waaronder de Alpe d’Huez, moeten worden bedwongen met in totaal 5200 hoogtemeters. De zwaarste wielerwedstrijd voor amateurs. Omdat De Franse Alpen een uitstekend habitat is voor gieren, zullen Dennis en Joost letterlijk naar de gieren fietsen. Met de Europese gieren gaat het goed, maar dat geldt helaas niet voor hun Afrikaanse soortgenoten, waarvan de aantallen zo hard achteruit gaan dat ze zelfs met uitsterven worden bedreigd en er internationaal sprake is van een Afrikaanse gieren crisis.

Gieren zijn onmisbaar in de natuur. Deze aaseters ruimen de karkassen op die anders ziekten zouden kunnen verspreiden. Op dit moment worden alle Afrikaanse gieren zeer ernstig bedreigd. Zo erg zelfs dat afgelopen jaar alle Afrikaanse gieren zijn opgewaardeerd op de IUCN lijst van bedreigde diersoorten. Van sommige soorten zijn de aantallen in de laatste decennia met maar liefst 90% achteruitgegaan en deze soorten zullen uitsterven als er niet snel actie wordt ondernomen. De bedreigingen zijn divers, maar vergiftiging vormt momenteel een zeer ernstig en acuut probleem. Omdat gieren op karkassen afkomen, houden de park rangers hen in de gaten en kunnen zij op deze manier stropers sneller op het spoor komen. Om dit te voorkomen willen stropers de gieren uitroeien door gif te strooien op en rond het karkas, zodat zij niet worden ontdekt. Wekelijks kosten deze praktijken aan duizenden Afrikaanse gieren het leven. Maar ook boeren, die hun vee verliezen aan roofdieren vergiftigen karkassen om de roofdieren te doden. Onbedoeld doden ze daarmee soms wel 150 gieren in één keer’.

Om deze praktijken te stoppen willen we geld inzamelen om een project te ondersteunen dat erop is gericht om de vergiftigingen te rapporteren, op te sporen en het vergiftigde gebied schoon te maken zodat niet nog meer gieren (en andere dieren) vergiftigd worden. Daarnaast worden lokale boeren voorgelicht en worden hen alternatieven aangeboden om hun vee tegen roofdieren te beschermen.

Help Dennis and Joost to save the majestic African vulturesDennis Apples and Joost Lammers, respectively caretaker and collection manager at Bird Park Avifauna in the Netherlands, will be cycling the infamous Marmotte in the French Alps with the aim to collect as much money as possible to prevent the extinction of Africa’s vultures.

La Marmotte is a legendary road cycle race in the French Alps of 176 km, with no less than four legendary Alpine giants, including Alpe d'Huez, within a total stretch of 5200 meters altitude. This is the toughest bike race for amateurs…

This part of the French Alps also provides excellent habitat for griffon and the spectacular bearded vultures, which have been reintroduced in the nearby Haute Savoy and have made a comeback in the Alps. Avalanches during winter and abrupt changes in weather during summer supply abundant food as they kill numerous wild and domestic animals which graze on the alpine meadows.

So making their way up these hills, Dennis and Joost will literally be biking their way to the vultures.

If the future for European vultures looks bright, this is sadly not at all the case for their equally fascinating African counterparts, whose numbers are declining so fast that they are now threatened with extinction – we now have an “African Vultures Crisis”.

Vultures are not only an impressive group of raptors and fascinating to watch, they play an essential role in nature. By swooping in to remove animal remains, these scavenger birds effectively clean up the environment and help prevent diseases from spreading.

But the typical sight of vultures over African savannas is rapidly being lost in Africa today. Several vultures saw their numbers decline by up to 95% in a few decades and these species will become extinct if no quick action is taken. The threats are diverse, but poisoning is currently the most serious and urgent problem. Because vultures are attracted to carcasses, the park rangers keep an eye on them to track down elephant poachers. To avoid this poachers kill the vultures by poisoning the carcass, which will kill vultures that come from far and wide to feed on the carcass.

This practice has killed many thousands of vultures the past few years. On top of that, pastoralists often poison lions and hyenas when they lose livestock to these carnivores, inadvertently killing up to 150 vultures which are often the first to show up at a poisoned carcass.

Because the vultures are slow to reproduce and only start to breed when several years old, the loss of so many at once has a huge impact on local populations.To stop these practices, we want to raise money to support an African vulture project that aims to greatly reduce threats in those areas where they are greatest. This will be done by training people to quickly report, detect and clean the scene of a poisoning so no more vultures (and other animals) die in the aftermath.

In addition, pastoralists are offered alternatives to protect their livestock from predators. This will help to greatly reduce the casualties and prevent extinction of Africa’s winged cleaning crew.
